Biography
Cindy Durant spent her first twenty-three years in California. In the early 80’s, she travelled to Australia, making it her home. Cindy now lives and works on a large property near Cactus Beach, on the far west coast of South Australia. She has spectacular views. The remote property is off-grid, completely run on solar and wind power. The only source of water is rainwater collected off the roofs and stored in tanks.
Cindy has always been a maker. She became passionate about glass in 1986. Cindy worked in kiln-formed glass for 30+ years. Cindy has developed many of her own methods while adapting techniques to her needs. Through dedication, long hours, experimentation, trial and error, Cindy has created her own original style and mastery of her skills. Over the course of her career, she has established professional practices in kiln-formed glass, vitreous enamel on metal, traditional silver smithing, Silver Metal Clay, glass bead making and screen printing. Currently, Cindy is focusing on her screen printing and exploring other printmaking techniques with dedication and persistence.
Since 2006, Cindy has mentored artists in her studios and run workshops sharing her skills Australia-wide. Cindy has exhibited widely. She has run community-based arts installation projects. Her work is in collections worldwide. Cindy was on a grant panel for Country Arts SA for 11 years. Many of her designs and inspirations come from her great love of nature, the sea and the landscapes around her home. She is also influenced by her childhood home in California, surf culture, Mexican folk art and ‘modern mythology’. Cindy is passionate about the arts. All the ‘small things’ fascinate her.
